Come Fly With Me Behind-the-Scene

In Hollywood, not too long ago, movie director Zack Snyder was putting together the soundtrack for his cinematic take on the Alan Moore-penned comic series “Watchmen”.

One particularly noteworthy scene played out to the sound of Allison Crowe’s much-loved recording of “Hallelujah” – the Leonard Cohen classic that’s been expressed in most ways imaginable. (This artistic association ultimately led to the director flying Crowe across the continent to cameo in his reboot of the Superman movie series, "Man of Steel".)

Considering the "Watchmen" scene was meant to be awkward and ironic, Snyder drew another breath and concluded Crowe’s performance was “too beautiful”, “too romantic” and “too sexy” for the film – replacing her version with Cohen’s original.

Allan Showalter, the ever-mysterious-and-curious eminence grise behind “Cohencentric: Leonard Cohen Considered" revisits that movie moment as only he can:

The Pardon - coming soon

The secret to success, a music industry maven once said, is “stickability”. That applies as well in the world of independent film. Director Tom Anton, his co-producers, Sandi Russell, Blair Daily, Jacqueline George and all the creative team behind “The Pardon” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe9yC13crc0 – reached a big milestone this week.

Variety is reporting monterey media, acclaimed distributor of indie and art-house films, has just acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to "The Pardon", a movie based on the true story of Louisiana’s Toni Jo Henry: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/jaime-kings-the-pardon-bought-by-monterey-media-1201421531

Monterey announces a “late Spring theatrical release is planned” for the feature which stars “Jaime King (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, ‘Heart of Dixie’, Pearl Harbor), and Academy Award nominee John Hawkes (Winter's Bone, The Sessions, Lincoln). The deal was negotiated between Shoreline Entertainment's Sam Eigen & Brian Sweet, and monterey media's Scott Mansfield.” http://www.montereymedia.com/Corporate_Info/pardon_the_press.php

While butter is being melted for the popcorn, we can enjoy the movie trailer – which has as its soundtrack Allison Crowe’s singular version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.

Mary ~ "Tidings Concert" (song 6)

Here's "Mary", a song Allison Crowe first heard on an episode of the "Sons of Anarchy" television drama - and which got her into Patty Griffin, the song's brilliant creator. Allison's friend, driver, and European tour manager, the legendary Axel Dollheiser, was Patty's driver in the 1990s and has been raving about her ever since - particularly the "Living With Ghosts" album. Things happen when and how they do - and, it's a confessional scene involving Gemma Teller (played by Katey Sagal) on SoA that brought this music into Allison's repertoire and "Tidings Concert".

Right Said Zack - for here's a jolly good follow

The graphic movie scene involving characters Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II continues to be a very hot topic of discussion amongst those who have now seen The Watchmen on the big, or, even, bigger (IMAX) screen.

Crave Online asks the film's Director Zack Snyder: "What about the Leonard Cohen song?"

Zack Snyder: "There are two Leonard Cohen’s because there is a Leonard Cohen on the end titles as well. Hallelujah, that love scene, I originally had the Allison Crowe version of that song, a version I’ve always loved, but in the end was just too romantic. Everybody thought that I meant it. They thought the love scene was serious, not that it isn’t serious but her version was too sexy. So I was like yeah, I’ve got to go back to the Leonard Cohen. For me it is incredibly ironic, even with that version of the song it is incredibly ironic. I don’t care what version of Hallelujah is on, that love scene it is ridiculous, but in a great way. With Leonard Cohen it is like you can’t miss it now, can you? I’m sure some people will but that is fine."
