Newfoundland Vinyl IV

Cause why not release a new album on your own birthday?

Hahaha #newmusic  #newfoundland  #vinyl

The lovely isle of Newfoundland, off Canada’s Atlantic coast, is inspiration for this collection – the newest in the “Vinyl” series from Corner Brook, NL musician Allison Crowe.

Allison’s in harbour with a boatful of tunes reveling in, and revealing, the region’s rich culture and history – stirring music that nourishes heart and soul.

The album opens with “Mice March” and spins to a replay with “Russian Dance”, both selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” – freshly arranged and performed “trad” style for Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s “Ed & Ed’s Newfoundland Christmas Concert”. And between these tracks is a bounty of adventuresome musical ideas – embracing songs of land and sea.

Traditional music, and modern favourites – funny, poignant, earthy and ethereal – all part of the “Newfoundland Vinyl” stage-show lovingly curated and directed by Allison Crowe each Summer at TNL’s Gros Morne Theatre Festival.

The album cover photograph by Allison shows us what she sees at home making music. And the songs themselves let us feel it all, as well. Joys and hardships be tugging on the heart-line first cast by Simani, and true as ever: “You might think she’s rugged and cold, but she’s home, sweet, home to me.”

Allison Crowe: all vocals, instruments, engineering and production.

Secrets – Allison Crowe and Linkers

Here is another one of my originals - Secrets: A song I wrote when I had a lot of stuff I wanted to talk about but didn’t know how, so I wrote this instead - and it’s definitely a longer song. These things aren’t unrelated. (Also FYI once I get set up with more gear one day I won’t have to sing the loud parts away haha but - for now - I’m loud and I apologize! ) (which is very Canadian of me) 🎹❤️🐶🎶 #singer #newfoundland #songwriter #piano #music #dachshund

Arthur – Allison Crowe and Linkers

This is Arthur - a song I wrote several years ago - as performed by myself and Linkers on squeaker. (This is silly but a special vid to me because he’s my best bud and also throwing the toy while playing music is my daily reality, lol) ❤️🐶🎹🎶 #music #piano #singersongwriter #singer #dachshund #dog

NB for more such fun, you can enjoy Allison & band, Linkers+ vids on Alley's Vero, Vimeo, Twitter and other social sites – links to come!

Lisa Marie Young's Story on Casefile

The case of Lisa Marie Young of Nanaimo, Canada is focus of the latest episode (26) of ‘Casefile’, an haunting Australian+ true crime podcast featured in Rolling Stone and on iTunes. It can be heard desk-top via Soundcloud @ https://soundcloud.com/casefile/case-26-lisa-marie-young and on devices @ https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/case-26-lisa-marie-young/id998568017?i=1000372988520&mt=2 and http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/casefile-true-crime-podcast/e/45496269 (+ numerous podcast-playing apps for, both, apple and android).

Musician Allison Crowe wrote “Lisa’s Song” for Lisa, a school-mate, and for Lisa’s family in 2002. It’s now over 14 years since loved ones last saw Lisa – daughter, sister, niece, grand-daughter, cousin, mentor, friend and all else that’s Lisa. Her story from June 30, 2002 is tragic. And it needs to be told until there is justice and, ultimately, some closure: http://www.allisoncrowe.com/lisaspage.html

In December 2015, Canada’s government announced an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women in this country. Draft terms of reference, recently leaked online, “do not go far enough in scope to look specifically at the effects indifferent or ineffective policing has had on families," says Sheila North Wilson, Grand Chief, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/mmiw-inquiry-violence-prevention-1.3686671)

“If anyone has info and wants to get in touch please do so at casefiletruecrime@gmail.com Will treat any info anonymously,” notes the international team behind ‘Casefile’. Reflecting Life

The occasion of a friend’s birthday rekindles “Home Reflections”. Musician, photographer and more, Shona McMillan met Allison Crowe when both performed at the “John Lennon Northern Lights Festival” – a magical time and happening in Durness, Scottish Highlands.

Imagery of the McMillans with Goldie, Snowy, the budgies – and a wee friend, Stewart Hall, dropped by for a visit – is accompanied by Allison’s performance of “When I’m Gone” – a tune from the pen of the great topical songwriter Phil Ochs. Shona’s poignant description of this creation on YouTube, old cine films shot by her family in 1960s Edinburgh, says best what it’s all about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF40lnbwOYk

It’s capped by Shona’s “mum's favourite saying which was the philosophy by which she tried to live her life: ‘I pass this way but once, any good that I can do - Let Me - for I may not pass this way again’."

Saltwater Joys

Putting a bow on things, here’s Allison Crowe’s version of “Saltwater Joys” – as culture blog Muruch tags it, the “beautiful finale” to “Newfoundland Vinyl II”.

This essential song’s penned by Wayne Chaulk, who plays bass and guitar in Newfoundland and Labrador’s flat out popular, prolific, music and comedy trio, “Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers” – alongside Kevin “Buddy” Blackmore, on mandolin, fiddle and guitar, & Ray Johnson, accordion and fiddle.

Allison Crowe’s a born islander – and, with heart and talent as great as Canada itself, she’s truly one with those saltwater joys from her birthplace of Nanaimo, BC to her adopted hometown of Corner Brook, NL.

http://music.allisoncrowe.com/album/newfoundland-vinyl-ii

As the album title suggests, it's a song collection inspired by, and arising from, Allison Crowe's involvement with the hit stage show, "Newfoundland Vinyl" - presented at Canada's Gros Morne Theatre Festival, and produced by TNL.

The album celebrates this creative bond between Crowe, an internationally-loved touring and recording artist, and Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador, a professional theatre company founded on Newfoundland's west coast in 1979.

For these past three Summers TNL's engaged Crowe as Musical Director of "Newfoundland Vinyl" - a perennial favourite at the annual GMTF.

TNL AD Jeff Pitcher's conception of a revival of vinyl era, and more, songs of Newfoundland and Labrador put wind in the sails of Allison Crowe's curatorial mission.

"It's here!" says pioneering music blog Muruch, "Allison Crowe just released Newfoundland Vinyl II and it's the perfect follow-up to her traditional folk masterpiece, Newfoundland Vinyl".

Of her immersions as Musical Director with TNL, and the melodic bounty that's landed, Allison Crowe notes: "There is so much wonderful music - you could piece together multiple anthologies and still only scratch the surface of such an extensive and rich collection. Each of these songs is its own story, of land and sea, of people, and each story in-and-of-itself could be an entire show. I'm truly grateful that you are here to hear the story these songs have to offer." She gives special thanks to "the incredibly talented and versatile" casts and crews of TNL's productions for their inspiration.
